Happy as Lazzaro

Happy as Lazzaro Alice Rohrwacher, an Italian director and screenwriter, took us into a fairy world tale. A fairy tale for adults, in which she shows a kindly boy named Lazzaro and his special approach to life. The film is full of metaphors and memorable scenes. Our favorite scene was the organ concert and mysterious music. The film is not only about the specific friendship of the good-natured peasant Lazzaro and the trifler marquis Tancredi. Also important is the village of Inviolata, stopped in time, and its inhabitants - portrayed with humor. The tobacco plantation of the Alfonsina awning and the face of the modern city were less funny though. We enjoyed the film, it took us for almost two hours into a different (?) world. However, we did not like the end. We knew from the reviews that it would surprise us, and it did. The movie is an Italian-Swiss coproduction in which one of the important roles is played by the director’s sister, Alba Rohrwacher....

Loro – Silvio Berlusconi, his beautiful butterflies and the others

Loro - Silvio Berlusconi, his butterflies and the others Inspired by The Last Prosecco we still are on the Italian wave. It brought us to Silvio Berlusconi and his entourage – presented by Paolo Sorrentino’s latest film “Loro”. Now these are different pairs of shoes. On one hand the refined low-budget production, on the other one – the expensive and opulent Fellini 2.0 version. Esthetics seem to be the main playground here while substance is on the retreat. Watching Sorrentino’s movie we see a hedonistic abyss of Berlusconi’s power game. We follow the career of Sergio, a small town smarty using girls to get access to “Lui”, to the eccentric prime minister who rewards such favors with golden butterfly necklaces. His clownish face appears as a tattoo in the very beginning of the film, in a sex scene.  Paolo Sorrentino paints lengthy pictures of designer drug infused nihilistic techno parties. There are however some scenes that stay in our memory for longer, e.g. Ber...

The last Prosecco

The last Prosecco - successful Italian film “Crime story crossed with comedy” – this description of the Italian film encouraged us to go to the cinema. We do not regret it. Inspector Stucky investigates a series of murders and the mysterious suicide of Desiderio Ancillotto, a count and winemaker.   The story unravels on the picturesque hills where Prosecco grapes are grown and recounts the conflict between greed and respect for the land and surrounding nature.  Best Italian film in 2017 Desiderio Ancillotto wants to protect beautiful hills and to produce the best Prosecco in the region. On the horizon though there is a huge cement plant. And its manager who is killed by gunshots shortly after the theatrical death of the old count. Who wrote the symbolic sentence on the wall - "Dust you were and dust you will become again"? Half Italian, half Persian Stucky is a stubborn person and does not look for easy solutions. Looking for the murder (murders?) he ...
