Sound of Falling („In die Sonne schauen”)

I went to see this controversial German Oscar nomination for 2026. There is no story to be told. The film is rather like a poem, consisting of allusions. The film presents the life of sisters in four periodes of the last hundred years. The camera follows mostly one sister and the spectators see the world through her eyes. There is a tense horror mood created by the director and reinforced by a very suggestive soundtrack. The sisters and the mothers live in a patriarchical society and try to find their ways. Disturbingly often it leads to death. In my opinion the film would gain if it were not so long. Almost three hours, without a story, was a challenge. Some people left earlier but I sat it through… And still I would  recommend to watch it.  Paul

Father Mother Sister Brother

We choose to watch this film because we felt we did not see a Jim Jarmusch  film for a long time. The film was shown in our neighborhood so we decided to walk there. We were only a couple of spectators. A pity because the film was very good. Jarmusch tells us three stories taking place in three different countries. All are about fragile family relations. In the first story a sister with her brother travel to their father far out in the woods of New Jersey. The mood created by Jarmush says more than the short, dialogues. The father is played wonderfully by Tom Waits . The second story is situated in Dublin. A mother expects her two daughters for a cup of tea, a ritual they have only once a year. The young women get there separately and they are very different characters.   The stiff tea ceremony reflects also the feelings between these three persons. The third story is quite different. A brother and a sister drive to their parents flat in Paris. The parents died ...

EO - donkey film as Polish Oscar-candidate

EO - donkey film as Polish Oscar-candidate Many of our friends have already recommended the latest film by Jerzy Skolimowski „EO” . As we have learnt that the Polish director had been inspired by a French movie from 1966 „Au hasard, Balthasar” , we decided to watch this picture first. It was a very depressing experience and we almost wanted to call off „EO”. But eventually we gave it a chance. When Paul was a boy one of his biggest questions was how the animals see our human world. Going to the cinema to watch „EO” he was hoping to get the answer. And indeed Skolimowski successed better than Robert Bresson . „EO” is based   a lot on colours and music. It tells a story of a donkey treeted badly in a Polish circus but loved by its caretaker Kasandra. With the help of animal activists it gets placed in a horse ranch and later in a child   therapie place. In road movie sequences it travels from Poland to Italy, where it is suppossed to end as …salami.   We we...

DAU. Natasha - the most controversial film project at Berlinale 2020

DAU. Natasha - film works in Kharkiv, Ukraine - fot. Wikipedia.org   I have to confess I wasn’t aware of all the controversy the film DAU. Natasha had provoked when I decided to go for a screening of this film. The controversy had circled around the production of the DAU project - shot as 700 hours raw material from 2008 to 2011 on set in Kharkiv/Ukraine - as well as in particular the torture scene of the DAU.Natasha installment depicting a women forced to insert a bottle into her vagina. I’d dare to guess that Russian main regisseur  Ilya Khrzhanovsky deliberately choose to scandalize his DAU-films and its production on set as a kind of shock advertisement. Khrzhanovsky might have followed a trick often used by Vladimir Sorokin , the Russian playwright initially involved into his DAU project but parting soon over differences. However it was, let me write down, why I (dis)liked that film. DAU. Natasha - grandest cinematic experiment in Russia The ...
